With French Revolutionary agents travelling freely but secretly between Ireland and England and war with France inevitable, the English government of Mr. Pitt is desperately anxious to uncover any plots between Irish rebels and the French.
Lieutenant James Merriman with his ship, the sloop Aphrodite, is ordered to the Irish Sea to assist the principal Treasury agent Mr. Grahame in this work. Merriman is plunged headlong into the world of espionage and when Grahame is seriously wounded it falls to Merriman to carry on the investigation.
Young James Merriman must keep all his wits about him to foil these plans especially when his adversary is revealed to be an exceptional French agent Henri Moreau who hopes that by helping the Irish to throw off the English yoke, France will be able to use Irish ports from which to attack England.

This is the first in a series, and as a lover of Historical Nautical fiction I am looking forward to more. Burnage has an easy writing style that gets you hooked and has a pace that does not flag. There is nothing new here, Merriman is traveling a well worn path with many cliche's of this type of period adventure. He comes from a naval family. He has a strong and competent companion from "before the mast". He is clever, brave, and good looking but does not realize how exceptional he is. The main thing to be explored in future books is that Burnage needs to flesh out other officers and give Merriman some people as followers as well as perhaps some patrons or mentors in the fleet. The plot involved piracy as well as French machinations and probably introduced a villain which we will see again.

A Certain Threat The Merriman Chronicles Book 1 edition by Roger Burnage Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
To all who appreciate a rousing tale of British seamen, this book is for you. Intrigue, spies, rebels and the British Navy. Who could ask for more. Well, me for one. I'm ready for the next one. Enough authenticity to leave the smell of ocean spray and tar in the nostrils.
This book is excellent, historical and give us a run for the money to all previously known authors.A great read
I enjoyed this book. It is typical of this genre, but better than most. A good plot with some historical basis made it an excellent read. The primness with which relations between men and women was treated was somewhat overblown, given the licentiousness of the Georgian age.Nevertheless, good enough that I bought the sequel.
This book kept me turning pages well into the night. Excellent writing about an action packed story. Would love to read the next book in the story of Captain Merryman.
Impressed. Hard to put down. It was realistic and the main characters are starting to be developed. Will wait till I say as good as a Bolitho.
The writing was very straight forward, but not spectacular. The main reason that I really liked it is that the plot was somewhat outside the box for the usual Napoleonic war novels, concentrating on the situation in Ireland and western England along the Irish Sea. So it was not a case of reading another spin on the well worn scenarios. The character development was also good. A nice change of pace.
A good, old fashion, sea story. Good read. It's predictable in places, but then again, like real life, not everyone survives.
